At the foot of Mt. Hikosan, the Koishiwara district is located in a calm basin surrounded by mountains. Red clay was extracted from the mountains in this area and was used as the raw material for Koishiwara pottery.
It is a well-known story that Soetsu Yanagi, Bernard Leach, and others in Mingei (Japanese folk art) movement (1926~) praised Koishiwara-ware as "the pinnacle of practical beauty".
